Window Shutters
Window Shutters are a vital if often overlooked feature of many historic homes. In the medieval period, when most windows were unglazed, window shutters kept out wind, rain, insects and birds.
Window shutters today continue to be not only fashionable, but a necessary requirement for homes in destructive weather areas such as hurricane prone areas. Generally there are two main types of window shutter and each has a very different purpose… Indoor shutters and Exterior shutters.
Interior Window Shutters
Interior window shutters are used to protect the house from the elements and also to create an element of privacy in the home. Adjustable interior shutters, also known as plantation shutters, are available in a variety of solid and engineered woods.
Plantation Shutters provide a characteristic window treatment that never goes out of style. They add real value to your home, are as practical as they are beautiful, and will last a lifetime. Interior window shutters also provide more insulation for your home and more variable light management in every room resulting in energy conservation. So, if your room is filled with heavy furniture, a dark wood floor or faces North, a lighter colored shutter would be more suitable for your room.
Exterior Window Shutters
Hurricane Shutters or "storm panel" shutters are often made out of a solid steel or aluminum frame and provide protection superior to that of Bahamas, Colonial, wooden, or vinyl window shutters. This shutter is also considerably less expensive than decorative window shutters.
Rolling shutters are designed to be made use of everyday. They can be operated by hand crank, strap system or motorized. They even come remote control! They are window shutters that are affixed at the top of your windows and doors and roll down when you want to make your home storm ready. Rolling window shutters are one of the most popular forms of window shutters used for hurricane proofing. They also provide security from unauthorized intrusion and sun and noise protection
Exterior window shutters can also be temporary. Temporary shutters are designed to withstand wind borne debris impacts and destructive winds during a hurricane. They are commercially available in a variety types of materials including steel, aluminum, and clear plastic.
For residential purposes, automatic window shutters are often used for the garage. It often makes use of a lever system that is installed with the shutter and electronically managed using a wall switch or a remote control.
